c. 1795 Gown

My First Gown

This gown was my first foray into 100% hand-sewn gowns. I loved constructing it and I haven’t stopped since. Unfortunately, this gown has not yet had a photoshoot associated with it.

Patterns and Materials

  • Pattern- American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking- This is a great guide to making your first, second, or hundredth gown!

Materials- I got really lucky on this project and found this cotton batiste for $15 at a garage sale.

  • Pattern- Corsets by Jill Salen- I used the 1790s corset pattern from this book. The shape is more correct for the early part of the decade and is also super high in the back.

Materials- Fabric was another thrift find. Synthetic baleen from WM Booth Draper.

  • Necklace- made from red silk ribbon and garnet drops

Earrings- TheMoonlightMyth- these are replicas of 1790s originals. They are fabulous and worth the investment! She has a less expensive style as well.

Shoes- American Duchess Mansfield boots in green
